An alternative approach to storing electrical energy in a conventional battery system installed in the aircraft is to combine energy storage and load-bearing capabilities in multifunctional structures, or structural batteries (SB), which have come to the forefront of research since the late 1990s.
Structural batteries, due to their own multifunctional nature, are expected to comply with standards for both structural components and energy storage at the same time. The certification requirements of aeronautical structures are substantially the same whatever the material used for their construction.
Electrical energy storage is one key element here, demanding safe, energy-dense, lightweight technologies. Combining load-bearing with energy storage capabilities to create multifunctional structural batteries is a promising way to minimize the detrimental impact of battery weight on the aircraft.
