China does not boast an abundance of battery metal deposits but ranks first largely due to its control over 80% of global raw material refining capacity. Additionally, China is the world's largest producer of graphite, the primary anode material for Li-ion batteries.
Now, let's take a look at the top 10 countries at the ranking. China remains top of the global lithium-ion battery supply chain ranking for three consecutive years, and will continue to dominate the supply chain through 2027, said the BloombergNEF, a research provider covering the global commodity market, on Nov 12.
According to BloombergNEF, China currently hosts 75 percent of all battery cell manufacturing capacity and 90 percent of anode and electrolyte production. The increasing prices of lithium has also led to higher investments in carbonate and hydroxide refinery facilities in the country, making it the leading refiner of battery metals globally.
Although China will likely maintain its dominance for the foreseeable future, other countries are ramping up their mining and refining capacities. Given the increasing importance of EVs, it will be interesting to see how the battery metals supply chain evolves going forward.
Sitting at 80% in 2020, it is expected to keep its top spot in 2025 albeit with 75% mining capacity. In addition to this, China is the world's largest producerof graphite, the primary anode material for Li-ion batteries. Australiaproduces half of global Lithium and boasts of the second-largest nickel reserves in the world.
